Because one mountain is never enough

Idaho's ski areas span the entire length and breadth of its diverse, dramatic landscape, letting you easily visit several in one trip. This allows the adventurous to get a taste of both our larger, well-known resorts and our smaller, under-the-radar, mom-and-pop, and nonprofit mountains — all of which boast spectacular terrain and are uniquely Idaho.

Here are some of our favorites among the many possible regional Idaho ski loops:

  • Schweitzer
  • Silver Mountain
  • Lookout Pass

Explore Idaho's largest and northernmost alpine ski resort, Schweitzer, and two nearby stellar destinations in Idaho's Silver Valley, Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain, the latter home to North America's longest gondola. Perched amid the Idaho Panhandle’s lofty and lush evergreen mountains and historic mining and timber towns, the three ski areas are within 30 minutes to 2 hours of each other, with both Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain conveniently along I-90.

  • Airports: Spokane (GEG)
  • Drive time: 5:07
  • Distance: 282 miles
  • Route map

Insider tip: Spend your last night in the region in the lovely mountain lake resort town of Coeur d'Alene, just a 40-minute drive from Spokane International Airport.

  • Brundage
  • Little Ski Hill
  • Tamarack

The region surrounding the mountain-lake communities of McCall, Donnelly, and Cascade receives substantial snowfall, making its diverse terrain a prime location for winter (and summer) sports. Brundage, home to the largest cat-skiing operation in the lower 48, and Tamarack, with its stunning 2,800 ft. of vertical, are only 45 minutes apart and 2 hours from Boise, Idaho’s capital city. Riders seeking a great terrain park, families with young skiers, and those interested in a little night skiing should also consider visiting the Little Ski Hill.

  • Airports: Boise (BOI)
  • Drive time: 5:39
  • Distance: 259 miles
  • Route map

Insider tip: Consider bookending your stay in downtown Boise and adding nearby Bogus Basin to your itinerary.

  • Bogus Basin
  • Sun Valley
  • Soldier Mountain
  • Rotarun

The greater Boise area, known as the Treasure Valley, is home to the largest U.S. nonprofit ski area, Bogus Basin. Meanwhile, the Wood River Valley about 2-1/2 hours away is home to Sun Valley, the nation's first destination ski resort and the birthplace of the chairlift. In between the two lies Soldier Mountain, the resort actor Bruce Willis used to own that operates a fantastic snowcat and TRAX-skiing program. Families with young skiers should also consider visiting Rotarun, “the little mountain with a big heart,” which offers free night skiing every Wednesday.

  • Airports: Boise (BOI), Hailey (SUN)
  • Drive time: 5:22
  • Distance: 236 miles
  • Route map

Insider tip: When visiting Soldier Mountain, keep in mind The Prairie Inn is the only hotel in nearby Fairfield, but there are vacation rentals in the area. Make reservations early since Fairfield is popular with snowmobilers.

  • Grand Targhee
  • Kelly Canyon
  • Pebble Creek

The pow sure likes to pile up at the three ski areas along the eastern edge of our state —Grand Targhee (technically in “Wydaho”), Kelly Canyon, and Pebble Creek. Targhee and Pebble boast steep pitches and lots of vert — 2,270 ft. and 2,200 ft., respectively — and Kelly and Pebble extend the fun by lighting up the slopes at night. Kelly also operates a family snow-tubing park in Idaho Falls called Gateway to Kelly Canyon.

  • Airport: Idaho Falls (IDA), Pocatello (PIH)
  • Drive time: 5:22
  • Distance: 282 miles
  • Route map

Insider tip: It’s tough to top the pizzas and the hot pools at Heise Hot Springs just down the road from Kelly Canyon.

  • Magic Mountain
  • Pomerelle
  • Pebble Creek

Three Idaho ski areas — Magic Mountain, Pomerelle, and Pebble Creek — rest along the northern rim of the Basin and Range Province, a geological region that stretches from eastern California to central Utah and from southern Idaho to the state of Sonora in Mexico. The snow and terrain — and especially the vibes — at these inexpensive under-the-radar mom-and-pop mountains are unparalleled. They can hold untouched pockets of pow for days — sometimes even weeks!

  • Airports: Twin Falls (TWF), Pocatello (PIH)
  • Drive time: 5:16
  • Distance: 253 miles
  • Route map

Insider tip: Twin Falls is home to Shoshone Falls (aka the Niagara of the West), Pomerelle is nearby City of Rocks National Reserve (an important, breathtaking landmark along the California Trail), and Pebble Creek is close world-famous Lava Hot Springs.
